    Case studies of Roots, Tubers and Bananas seed systems.

    The seed systems of RTB (root, tuber, and banana) crops are unique because they are propagated from vegetative parts of the plant, not from true seed. RTB seed is thus bulkier, more perishable, and more subject to the attacks of pests and diseases than is true seed. Because of this, there is often a gap between potential and real crop yields, which seed interventions seek to narrow. Seed systems are formal or informal networks of people and organizations that produce, plant, and distribute seed. Informal systems may deliver low quality seed, but not always. This book describes 13 RTB seed system interventions, using a framework based on the concepts of seed availability, access, and quality. The 13 case studies included (1) a potato-growers’ association in Ecuador, (2) a hydroponic seed potato in Peru, (3) a yam seed technology in Nigeria, (4) a banana and plantain project in Ghana, (5) a sweetpotato seed project in Tanzania and (6) one in Rwanda, (7) a seed potato system in Kenya, (8) cassava in Nicaragua, (9) seed potato in Malawi, (10) disease-resistant cassava varieties in seven African countries, (11) a tissue culture banana project, (12) an emergency plantain and banana project in East Africa, and (13) a large cassava seed project in six African countries

    Development of core outcome sets for studies relating to awareness and clinical management of reduced fetal movement

    Objective: This study aimed to create core outcome sets (COSs) for use in research studies relating to the awareness and clinical management of reduced fetal movement (RFM). Design: Delphi survey and consensus process. Setting: International. Population: A total of 128 participants (40 parents, 19 researchers and 65 clinicians) from 16 countries. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted to identify outcomes in studies of interventions relating to the awareness and the clinical management of RFM. Using these outcomes as a preliminary list, stakeholders rated the importance of these outcomes for inclusion in COSs for studies of: (i) awareness of RFM; and (ii) clinical management of RFM. Main outcome measures: Preliminary lists of outcomes were discussed at consensus meetings where two COSs (one for studies of RFM awareness and one for studies of clinical management of RFM). Results: The first round of the Delphi survey was completed by 128 participants, 66% of whom (n = 84) completed all three rounds. Fifty outcomes identified by the systematic review, after multiple definitions were combined, were voted on in round one. Two outcomes were added in round one, and as such 52 outcomes were voted on in two lists in rounds two and three. The COSs for studies of RFM awareness and clinical management are comprised of eight outcomes (four maternal and four neonatal) and 10 outcomes (two maternal and eight neonatal), respectively. Conclusions: These COSs provide researchers with the minimum set of outcomes to be measured and reported in studies relating to the awareness and the clinical management of RFM.</p

    Pharmacology of enalapril in children: a review

    Enalapril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that is used for the treatment of (paediatric) hypertension, heart failure and chronic kidney diseases. Because its disposition, efficacy and safety differs across the paediatric continuum, data from adults cannot be automatically extrapolated to children. This review highlights paediatric enalapril pharmacokinetic data and demonstrates that these are inadequate to support with certainty an age-related effect on enalapril/enalaprilat pharmacokinetics. In addition, our review shows that evidence to support effective and safe prescribing of enalapril in children is limited, especially in young children and heart failure patients; studies in these groups are either absent or show conflicting results. We provide explanations for observed differences between age groups and indications, and describe areas for future research

    The impact of climate change and urban growth on urban climate and heat stress in a subtropical city

    Urban residents face increasing risk of heat stress due to the combined impact of climate change and intensification of the urban heat island (UHI) associated with urban growth. Considering the combined effect of urban growth and climate change is vital to understanding how temperatures in urban areas will change in the future. This study investigated the impact of urban growth and climate change on the UHI and heat stress in a subtropical city (Brisbane, Australia) in the present day (1991–2000) and medium term (2041–2050; RCP8.5) during summer. A control and urban growth scenario was used to compare the temperature increase from climate change alone with the temperature increase from climate change and urban growth. Average and minimum temperatures increased more with climate change and urban growth combined than with climate change alone, indicating that if urban growth is ignored, future urban temperatures could be underestimated. Under climate change alone, rural temperatures increased more than urban temperatures, decreasing the effect of the UHI by 0.4 °C at night and increasing the urban cool island by 0.8 °C during the day. With climate change, the number of hot days and nights doubled in urban and rural areas in 2041–2050 as compared to 1991–2000. The number of hot nights was higher in urban areas and with urban growth. Dangerous heat stress, defined as apparent temperature above 40 °C, increased with climate change and occurred on average 1–2 days every summer during 2041–2050, even in shaded conditions. There was higher temperature increases with urban growth and climate change than with climate change alone, indicating that reducing the effect of the UHI is vital to ensuring urban growth does not increase the heat stress risks that urban residents will face in the future

    Probing bactericidal mechanisms induced by cold atmospheric plasmas with Escherichia coli mutants

    Mechanisms of plasma induced microbial inactivation have commonly been studied with physico-chemical techniques. In this letter, Escherichia coli K-12 and its ∆recA, ∆rpoS and ∆soxS mutants are employed to discriminate effects of UV photons, OH radicals, and reactive oxygen species produced in atmospheric discharges. This microbiological approach exploits the fact that these E. coli mutants are defective in their resistance against various external stresses. By interplaying bacterial inactivation kinetics with optical emission spectroscopy, oxygen atoms are identified as a major contributor in plasma inactivation with minor contribution from UV photons, OH radicals, singlet oxygen metastables, and nitric oxide

    Accuracy and Stability of Computing High-Order Derivatives of Analytic Functions by Cauchy Integrals

    High-order derivatives of analytic functions are expressible as Cauchy integrals over circular contours, which can very effectively be approximated, e.g., by trapezoidal sums. Whereas analytically each radius r up to the radius of convergence is equal, numerical stability strongly depends on r. We give a comprehensive study of this effect; in particular we show that there is a unique radius that minimizes the loss of accuracy caused by round-off errors. For large classes of functions, though not for all, this radius actually gives about full accuracy; a remarkable fact that we explain by the theory of Hardy spaces, by the Wiman-Valiron and Levin-Pfluger theory of entire functions, and by the saddle-point method of asymptotic analysis.     Pain prediction by serum biomarkers of bone turnover in people with knee osteoarthritis: an observational study of TRAcP5b and cathepsin K in OA

    Objectives: To investigate serum biomarkers, tartrate resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRAcP5b) and cathepsin K, indicative of osteoclastic bone resorption, and their relationship to pain and pain change in knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: Sera and clinical data were collected from 129 people (97 with 3-year follow-up) with knee OA from the Prediction of Osteoarthritis Progression (POP) cohort. Knee OA-related outcomes in POP included: WOMAC pain, NHANES I (pain, aching and stiffness), subchondral sclerosis, and radiographically determined tibiofemoral and patellofemoral OA. Two putative osteoclast biomarkers were measured in sera: TRAcP5b and cathepsin K. Medial tibia plateaux were donated at knee arthroplasty for symptomatic OA (n=84) or from 16 post mortem controls from the Arthritis Research UK (ARUK) Pain Centre joint tissue repository. Osteoclasts were stained for TRAcP within the subchondral bone of the medial tibia plateaux. Results: Serum TRAcP5b activity, but not cathepsin K-immunoreactivity, was associated with density of TRAcP-positive osteoclasts in the subchondral bone of medial tibia plateaux. TRAcP-positive osteoclasts were more abundant in people with symptomatic OA compared to controls. Serum TRAcP5b activity was associated with baseline pain and pain change. Conclusions: Our observations support a role for subchondral osteoclast activity in the generation of OA pain. Serum TRAcP5b might be a clinically relevant biomarker of disease activity in OA

    The AllDifferent Constraint with Precedences

    We propose ALLDIFFPREC, a new global constraint that combines together an ALLDIFFERENT constraint with precedence constraints that strictly order given pairs of variables. We identify a number of applications for this global constraint including instruction scheduling and symmetry breaking. We give an efficient propagation algorithm that enforces bounds consistency on this global constraint. We show how to implement this propagator using a decomposition that extends the bounds consistency enforcing decomposition proposed for the ALLDIFFERENT constraint. Finally, we prove that enforcing domain consistency on this global constraint is NP-hard in general
